Michael Wolfson's Music
Michael Wolfson was born in 1937 in Manchester England. Always a late starter he began studying piano and composition at the age of 19 in Johannesburg and graduated with honours from the University of South Africa (UNISA) in piano two years later. From 1958 to 1959 he attended the Vienna Academy of Music studying composition and from 1959 to 1962 he continued his studies in London with the British composer Anthony Milner graduating with Licentiate in Music from Trinity College. On his return to South Africa was active in the SA Composers Society and served on the committee of the SA Music Teachers. He opened a studio and taught both in various schools and privately. In 1965 he shared first prize for a string composition organised by the South African Composers Society. His work has been performed in Vienna, Johannesburg and Cape Town (where he now resides), and has been broadcast on radio. At the age of 59 he started Cello lessons and is now very active playing chamber music with various groups and participates in performances at various venues. Michael also presents a regular programme on Fine Music Radio (Cape Town). He had not composed for a number of years but on his retirement the muse returned and now divides his time between practicing, playing and composing.
Michael is also an accomplished artist, and his works have been exhibited in many galleries. Learn more about his paintings at http://www.capegallery.co.za/mike_wolfson_cv.htm.
